The Fender Mustang Bass was introduced in 1964 as a more affordable and student-friendly alternative to Fender's pricier models, such as the Precision and Jazz Basses.
It features a short 30-inch scale neck, which enhances playability, especially for beginners or musicians with smaller hands. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Fender launched the "Competition" series, which was known for its bold, colorful finishes and racing stripes designed to resonate with the vibrant youth culture of the era.
The Competition Bass, part of this series, maintained the core design of the Mustang Bass but added a distinctive visual flair. It retains the same basic pickup configuration as the standard Mustang Bass—a single split-coil pickup and a straightforward control layout with volume and tone knobs.
This 1971 model is a one-owner instrument that Dominique purchased in eastern France when he began playing in a band. It was originally sold with a European long-scale case, as short-scale cases were not available at the time.Dominique later acquired a Precision Bass, which he played more frequently, resulting in the Mustang's excellent condition. Before putting it up for sale, Dominique had a luthier replace the pots due to some scratchiness.
